RESULTS: The subjects receiving the L. rhamnosus P. freudenreichii-supplemented juice exhibited a 24% increase in defecation frequency. However, no reduction in laxative use was observed. The fecal azoreductase activity was also significantly reduced in this group. No changes in fecal pH or mucin excretion were observed. CONCLUSION: Some relief from constipation may be observed with the combination of L. rhamnosus P. freudenreichii. This probiotic combination also reduced fecal enzyme activity. Lactulose promotes the growth of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria and, more specifically, Lactobacillus acidophilus in the colon. Lactulose and lactulose-containing products fermented with lactic acid bacteria lower colonic pH balancing intestinal microecology and normalizing intestinal transit. In animal studies, lactulose promotes a mainly Gram-positive faecal microflora, but large doses of lactulose may be associated with transient diarrhoea. Our studies indicate that lactulose with lactic acid bacteria effectively relieves constipation in human volunteers. A new developed Acidophilus milk has been introduced as therapy in different disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. The milk contains acid resistant tribes of L. acidophilus and is fortified with vitamins, its fat content is low. The passage of alive L. acidophilus could be proved. The preparation showed a clear response in patients suffering from intestinal disorders due to an application of antibiotics and in patients with constipations. One capsule containing a lyophilized mixture of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium lactis, Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus administered three times daily significantly reduced the frequency of diarrhea p 0.019 ; compared to the placebo. This gives a protection rate of 39.4% against travelers' diarrhea in Egypt. The supplementation of infant formula with B. bifidum and S. thermophilus can significantly reduce the incidence of acute diarrhea p 0.035 ; and rotavirus shedding p + 0.025 ; in infants admitted to hospital.

Quate and essential for the growth of B. bifidum when in mixed culture. Our results agree only partially with this report because maximum viable numbers and concentrations of fermentation end products except acetic acid ; were attained at an inoculum ratio for B. lactis and L. acidophilus of 1: plain milk. Conversely, acetic acid concentrations were maximum at a 10: 1 inoculum ratio, which is justified in view of the heterofermentative nature of bifidobacteria 29 ; , and this observation may also explain requirements previously claimed 28 ; . The growth of L. acidophilus in a coculture with B. lactis at a 1: inoculum ratio was enhanced relative to the pure culture, and no inhibition occurred in the presence of either MHP or MHN. This enhancement was possibly due to the buffering effect of acetate p Ka of 4.8 ; , essentially produced by the latter strain, which prevented sharp declines in milk pH 11 ; , and may also suggest a certain degree of symbiosis between the two strains. On the whole, our results suggest that the eventual selection of the strains B. lactis Bo and L. acidophilus Ki as a mixed thermophilic starter to produce a cheese product not only would have the advantage of rapid growth and production of lactic and acetic acids 8 ; , but also would likely increase the probiotic nutritional value of the final product 31, 32 ; . A positive I-ClO, discharge test has been observed in patients with defective thyroidal enzymatic iodide organification. We now report that the I-ClO, discharge test is frequently positive in newly diagnosed, untreated patients with hyperthyroid Graves' disease.Years ago, Stewart and Murray 3 ; reported that 2 of 20 hyperthyroid patients had marginal perchlorate discharge values of 3% and 13%. The test becamefrequently positive where stable iodine, at doses ranging between 125-1500 pg, was added as a carrier to the r3'I 3, 4 ; . Thus, the high prevalence of positive I-ClO, dischargetests observed in our study is due to the enhanced sensitivity of the test due to the use of carrier-stable iodine with the 1311, observed in other studies 3, 4, 11-13 ; . We as have also observed for the first time that the positive I-ClO, test reverted to normal in 66% of patients after 1 yr of continuous MM1 therapy. A transiently positive C104 discharge test has been previously observed in neonates with transient congenital hypothyroidism 14, 15 ; . The I-ClO, 4, 16 ; and ClO, discharge tests 17 ; in hyperthyroid patients with Graves' diseaseshortly after 13'1 treatment may also be transiently positive. The strains were identified to the species and strain levels under microaerophilic conditions by using API CH50 strips and fermentation tests according to specifications of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute manual 4a ; and subsequently stored at -70'C in skim milk. They included the following strains isolated between 1982 and 1986 from the healthy urogenital tract of adults and stored with minimal numbers of passages: L. casei subsp. rhamnosus GR1, RC15, and RC17; L. acidophilus RC14; L. plantarum RC6 and RC20; and L. jensenii RC28. The other previously isolated strains were the dairy strain L. casei subsp. rhamnosus 81, poultry isolates L. fermentum B54 and A60 and L. acidophilus T13, and American Type Culture Collection strain L. casei subsp. rhamnosus ATCC 7469. The kinetic and regulatory properties of the deoxycytidineldeoxyadenosine kinase from Lactobacillus acidophilus K-26 have been investigated. From initial velocity and product inhibition studies, the kinetic mechanism of the deoxycytidine dCyd ; kinase function with MgATP as phosphate donor ; was found to be rapid equilibrium random Bi Hi. Deoxyadenosine dAdo ; kinase activity also exhibited a random sequential addition of substrates. Separate active sites for dCyd and dAdo kinase activities are demonstrated by kinetic analysis of the interaction of both substrates, such that dCyd noncompetitively stimulates dAdo phosphorylation up to 500%, while dAdo is a poor linear competitive inhibitor of dCyd phosphorylation. Deoxyadenosine kinase activity exhibits nonhyperbolic dependence of reaction rate on dAdo concentration; this effect is attributed to the interaction of dAdo with both a catalytic site and an allosteric site on the enzyme, but this homotropic cooperativity is abolished by dCyd. The two deoxynucleosides appear to be phosphorylated by separate phosphate donor sites also since, in the simultaneous presence of both nucleosides, the total rate of phosphorylation equals the sum of the velocities measured separately, if correction for the stimulation of dAdo kinase by dCyd is made. Although dCyd kinase activity is subject to feedback inhibition by its distal product, dCTP, the latter is also a phosphate donor to dCyd in the absence of ATP, and the kinetic mechanism is also sequential random.
