Flavonoids are a class of low-molecular-weight phenolic compounds that are widely distributed in the plant kingdom. Over 6000 naturally occurring flavonoids have been described, and many of them are common in higher plants Harborne & Williams 2000 ; . These compounds frequently serve as pigments in plants, but are also involved in many biological interactions. Flavonoids are built upon a C6-C3-C6 flavone skeleton in which the three-carbon bridge between the phenyl groups is commonly cyclized with oxygen. Based on the degree of unsaturation and oxidation of the three-carbon segment, flavonoids are divided in several classes Fig.1A ; . Most flavonoids reported in the literature are glycosides of a relatively small number of flavonoid aglycons, which are generally water-soluble and accumulate in the vacuoles of plant cells Bohm 1998, Seigler 1998 ; . A significant role of flavonoids that has been under very active research recently, is their possible beneficial influence on human health. Flavonoids have been found to own potent antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities in vitro. There is growing evidence from human consumption studies supporting a protective role of flavonoids in cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Many flavonoids have been found to possess antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal or anti-allergenic properties. However, because of the wide variety of different flavonoids, their possible interactions with other substances, and the complexity of their metabolism in the human system, more research in this area is still needed Hertog et al. 1995, Hollman et al. 1996, Peterson & Dwyer 1988, Ross & Kasum 2002 ; . Blueberries, which are a rich source of anthocyanins, have been found to be beneficial for health Kalt & Dufour 1997, Smith et al. 2000 ; . The antioxidant capacity of blueberries has been analyzed in several studies Heinonen et al. 1998, Prior et al. 1998, Kalt et al. 1999, 2000, Khknen et al. 2001, Moyer et al. 2002 ; . Also, the anticancer activity of the Vaccinium species Bomser et al. 1996, Katsube et al. 2003 ; and the antimicrobial properties of berry phenolics, including those from the Vaccinium species, Rauha et al. 2000, Puupponen-Pimi et al. 2001 ; have been studied in vitro. Cranberry V. macrocarpon, V. oxycoccos ; proanthocyanidins have been found to prevent urinary tract infections Howell et al. 1998, Kontiokari et al. 2001 ; . A study of Youdim et al. 2000 ; showed the beneficial effects of blueberries on brain functions related to ageing in vivo. Bilberry fruits and leaves were used in folk medicine in Europe already in the Middle Ages Morazzoni & Bombardelli 1996 ; . In the US, bilberry has been among the most significant herbs for sale during the recent years Blumenthal 1999, 2001.

Sympathetically Maintained Pain Syndrome, is rejected by Stanton-Hicks et al.8 as a variable phenomenon that should be seen as a symptom and is associated with various abnormalities, including CRPS-I. In 1994 the IASP held a consensus conference7 at which the term Complex Regional Pain Syndrome CRPS-I ; was introduced along with corresponding diagnostic criteria see table 3 ; . This classification is descriptive in nature, and not based on pathophysiology or scientific findings. Rather, it is the result of consensus based on expert opinion8. Pain is the sine qua non for this diagnosis. This classification of CRPS-I has been criticised both inside and outside the IASP. Galer et al. examined 18 CRPS-I patients and found it to be insufficiently specific59. Both Galer et al.59 and Harden et al.60 contend that the criteria need to be validated by empirical research. It seems that the IASP criteria have to date been used in only 15% of all recent research in this field61, 62. Bruehl et al. conducted a study on 117 patients with CRPS-I and proposed a change to the criteria, rendering them more specific table 4 ; 58. Unfortunately, this also results in a loss of sensitivity, as Van de Vusse et al. have confirmed63. The changes proposed by Bruehl et al.58 have not so far been accepted or adopted by the IASP. However, these 'researchdiagnostic criteria' put forward by Bruehl et al. might allow CRPS-I to be more clearly distinguished from other forms of neuropathic pain. Baron et al.64 produced a commentary suggesting another change to these diagnostic criteria see appendix 2 ; , but this has not yet been ratified either. The objections against the IASP criteria are the small numbers of patients participating in the various trials and the requirement for pain and or sensitivity disorders to be present. But the supporters of the criteria see the latter aspect as one of its advantages. No laboratory tests are needed in order to establish the diagnosis of CRPS-I on the basis of the aforementioned criteria, and there is also no need to ascertain whether the symptoms improve in response to nerve blockade sympathetic blockade ; 59. The use of these criteria allows practitioners to diagnose CRPS-I by means of anamnesis and physical examination alone60. See also section 1.3 on additional diagnosis. The criteria drawn up by Veldman et al.1 table 5 ; , widely used in the Netherlands, are also based on anamnesis and physical examination. The difference between these criteria and the IASP criteria is that pain is not a requirement per se. Veldman et al.1 also reported that no causal noxa could be found in about 10% of 829 patients with RSD spontaneous RSD ; . They therefore concluded that sensitivity disorders were not always a required feature.

That instinct which made her shrink from her mother's presence was not without its justification; the dark powers which circled her existence had not vainly forced their influence upon her. Her first impulse was to flee from the house; the air breathed pestilence and death, death of the soul. Looking about her in the anguish of conflicting thoughts, her eyes fell upon the pages she had written. These now came before her as a proof of contagion which had seized upon her own nature; she tore the letter hastily into fragments, and, striking fire with a match, consumed them in the grate. As she watched the sparks go out, there came a rustling of dresses past her door. She flung herself upon her knees and sought refuge in wild, wordless prayer. A fortnight after this Maud went late in the evening to the room where she knew her father was sitting alone. Paul Enderby looked up from his papers in surprise; it was some time since Maud had sought private conversation with him. As he met her pale, resolute face, he knew that she had a serious purpose in thus visiting him, and his look changed to one of nervous anticipation. "Do I disturb you and bortezomib.
Area of lichen heath with sheeps fescue, wavy hair-grass Deschampsia flexuosa and Rhacomitrium lanuginosum. This is of particular interest as it forms the largest example of this habitat in the Lake District where it is very rare and only found from two other localities: the summits of Skiddaw and Kirk Fell. To the north of Scafell Pike are a series of species rich high altitude gills which lead down to Lingmell Beck, of which Piers Gill provides the classic example of this type in Cumbria. The gill supports a range of tall herb ledge communities with roseroot Sedum rosea, mountain sorrel Oxyria digyna, northern bedstraw, alpine ladys mantle, wild angelica and alpine meadow-rue. Also present are starry, purple and mossy saxifrages Saxifraga stellaris, S. oppositifolia and S. hypnoides and in places banks of mountain saxifrage S. aizoides grow in profusion. Other ledges are dominated by great wood-rush Luzula sylvatica and bilberry with a wide range of ferns including lemon-scented fern Oreopteris limbosperma, beech fern Phegopteris connectilis, oak fern Gymnocarpium dryopteris, scaly male-fern and broad buckler fern. The species composition of the neighbouring gills of Skew and Greta is similar but in Skew Gill there is a greater abundance of purple saxifrage. In contrast, Ruddy Gill to the north-east of Great End has a more lowland character and as a result supports a different range of herbs and is more wooded. Species include devils-bit scabious Succisa pratensis, stone bramble Rubus saxatilis, marsh hawks-beard Crepis paludosa and common valerian Valeriana officinalis. Herb rich ledges also occur on several of the crags within the site and support a similarly diverse range of species to those associated with the gills. Cam Spout, Great End, Lingmell and Horn Crags are particularly rich and support roseroot, bladder campion Silene maritima, golden-rod Solidago virgurea, great woodrush and in places abundant heather Calluna vulgaris. In addition uncommon species such as dwarf juniper Juniperus communis spp. nana, alpine cinquefoil Potentilla crantzii, glaucous meadow-grass Poa glauca, alpine saw-wort Saussurea alpina and bearberry Arctosaphylos uva-ursi occur. Below the summit plateau and crags the slopes are a mosaic of scree, grassland and bilberry heath. The grasslands are generally dominated by mat-grass Nardus stricta with sheeps fescue, tormentil Potentilla erecta, heath bed-straw, and green-ribbed sedge Carex binervis. The scree slopes however, support few higher plants, but in places as on the south-west face of Scafell abundant Rhacomitrium lanuginosum with patches of grass heath are present. Lying to the north of Great End are Sprinkling and Styhead Tarns, which are good examples of upland nutrient poor tarns. In both cases marginal aquatics include bulbous rush Juncus bulbosus, intermediate water-starwort Callitriche hamulata, quillwort Isoetes lacustris, shoreweed Littorella uniflora and floating bur-reed Sparganium angustifolium. Awlwort Subularia aquatica a locally rare species occurs in both tarns, but water lobellia Lobellia dortmanna is only found in Styhead Tarn. Between the two tarns on Seathwaite Fell lies an extensive area of mat-grass with flushes and small pools. This area supports one of the largest known populations of the nationally scarce Mountain Ringlet Erebia epiphron in Cumbria, whilst the summit boulder field of Scafell is the only known English locality for the boreo-British ground beetle Nebria nivalis. The site also supports breeding peregrine, raven, ring ouzel and wheatear and bilberry.

Mice lacking tissue KLK gene have endothelial dysfunction with reduced flow-induced vasodilatation. We investigated whether endothelial function EF ; and arterial properties were altered in R53H heterozygotes compared to wild-type R53R homozygotes . Design and methods : 30 R53R and 10 R53H normotensive Caucasian subjects were randomly assigned in a crossover study to 2 contrasted UKLKa modulating diets of low NaCl 20 mmol d ; and high KCl 140 mmol d ; intake LNHK ; and high NaCl 250 mmol d ; and low KCl 50 mmol d ; intake HNLK ; administered during 1 week. Results : UKLKa was lower in R53H than R53R subjects, especially during LNHK median: 20017 vs 51515 U 24h, respectively, p 0.01 ; . R53H subjects had significantly smaller D and increased SS in all experimental conditions B, HI, HH, post-TNT; * p 0.05, R53R vs. R53H ; . HNLK diet tended to accentuate differences between genotypes. Changes in diameter during hyperhemia did not differ between genotypes. However, when DD % ; was normalized to changes in SS EF index ; , EFi was significantly altered under HNLK diet. Conclusion : Besides a 50% reduction in UKLKa, the R53H subjects have an inward eutrophic remodeling of the brachial artery, together with a chronic increase in SS. But R53H have no modification in EF, despite chronic increase in SS. HNLK diet per se altered significantly EF for both genotypes by comparison to LNHK.
